4-0: Are you joking?

I was just wondering how suddenly nothing could go wrong for England? Steve McLaren in his wildest dreams would have thought of 2-0 victory. This England team which never looked like scoring in the world cup, suddenly cleans up Greece, which is quite a decent team (European champions? Even Liverpool was European champion!).

The biggest positive of the game was that the new found spirit and attitude of the English. Captain Fantastic John Terry started off with his signature header and Lampard got on to the scoresheet for the second time in the last three matches. Then Peter “what-am-i-doing” Crouch gets two. How on earth does this happen. Morientes was struggling to score and this tall boy somehow nets it. Somethings really defy logic. If I were Steve, I would still drop Peter “what-to-do-with-the-ball’ Crouch and put Darren Bent and Defoe upfront.

End of the day, these are friendlies. England scored heavily in a pre-world cup friendly where Crouch even got a hattrick. But in the big stage, when it mattered, England was such boring flop. But I see some light at end of the tunnel!

Poor Crouchy, what does the kid have to do for people to get off his back. He scored tons leading up to the WC, was one of the few players to find the net in the WC and then gets rested.

Admittedly without the injury to Dean Ashton he probably wouldnt have played, but he did and once again proves he can find himself in the right place at the right time. People say he got lucky, but thats the sign of a poacher.

He’s tall, he holds the ball up well, he’s not just good but excellent with the ball at his feet.

In the WC, whether it was Sven’s tactics or just the way the other players saw to play with him, we kept punting the high ball in to him. Give the guy the ball on the floor and he can really do things with it.

Lets start looking at the player he is, not the player we expcect at 6.6 (6.7) whatever :)

Fair enough. May be, I do have a bias against him. His first touch is awful and 8 out of 10 times loses the ball right in front of the box. Despite all this, he scores. Thats why I call him lucky. But it is very hard to realise that, he is ‘the one’ to score for England. I always thought there are better quality strikers than Crouch to represent England.

See I have to disagree with you there. I think his first touch, in general, is very good. Not having a go but I think Crouch carries a lot of baggage these days. That is, people have made so much of his faults that these are the only things people see in his game. I’ve got to say, if I had the England team at the moment I would be playing him until someone else can consistently find the net up front.

Well thats your opinion and I have mine. With Craig Bellamy and now Dirk Kuyt in Pool, I dont see Crouch doing any better than last season. For a team of Liverpool’s stature, they certainly need a top quality world-class striker. I dont really think of Peter Crouch as ‘top quality world-class striker’.

Yup I agree with you there, hes not a top quality world class “striker”. He’s a top quality world class centre forward.
